My fiance and I have been engaged for a year and a half. We want to have a destination wedding. His family is super supportive and up for anything. "Just tell us when and where" is their feeling. My parents are divorced. My dad’s family has not been involved in my life since their seperation over 10 years ago. After discussing preliminary plans for a destination wedding last year my mom told me that she wanted me to reconsider; and my dad said he didn’t think he would have a very good time. Since that time we have looked at local venues. Everyone tells me it is my day and I should do what I want. My fiance has been super supportive and easy going about the whole thing. He has been so patient! I just want to get married! I don’t want to upset my family by making a choice that they feel is "purposefully excluding people". For example, my grandmother would not be able to attend. But it has been in our plan all along to have a party when we return to celebrate with everyone!

Couple is in early 60s. Not interested in the commercial resorts ie. Sandals, Atlantis, Hedonism, etc.

It will be a very intimate ceremony, probably no more than eight people. National and/or city park recommendations are appreciated!

Destination wedding and limited guests?

My boyfriend and I have been talking about getting married in Hawaii. We really want to do that because It’s a bit cheaper to have a destination wedding there than it is to plan a big wedding where we live. We know for sure that we want our immediate families there, both sets of parents, siblings, and siblings families, plus 2 extra guests, for a total of about 21 people. His mother wants to have their entire extended family there, but we can’t afford that even if we wanted it. Would it be rude to just have our immediate families at the wedding in Hawaii? We were kind of planning on having a reception/barbeque back home for everyone that we’d invite if we had the wedding here. Is that a good idea?
Also, does anyone know some affordable places that we can get airline tickets/hotel/ etc.? We know we will be able to save up for the wedding itself, but after looking at a few travel websites last night, we’re looking at about 10,000 for just the 2 of us for Hawaii.
Some of our family members just filed for bankruptcy, so they wouldn’t really be able to come unless we found a really affordable deal for them to go.

I’ve had the good fortune of having all my guy friends remain bachelors into their mid-20s while enjoying life in Chicago. However, one of them has succumbed to marriage and will have a ball and chain come late March.

My aforementioned good fortune has also resulted in my inexperience when it comes to wedding etiquette. This is the first wedding I’ve been invited to (been to a few as a date) As such, I don’t know what’s proper when it comes to these things.

Specifically, my questions are these:

1) I want to buy the couple a gift and can’t find their names in any of the major registries. Would it be improper to ask them where they’re registered? Or is this perfectly ok?

2) This will be a destination wedding in Puerto Vallarta. If I happen to get them a bigger, bulkier gift, does this mean that I have to drag this gift all the way to Mexico with me? Or is there a way around this so that I can just give them the gift when they come back to the U.S.?

Thanks in advance
I was kidding with the "ball and chain" reference Rita :o ) I’m happy for my buddy and his fiancee’s a good girl…they’ll be great.
Thanks so far for your answers, but here’s a FOLLOW UP QUESTION to some of your answers:

If I get them a gift card, how do I determine the appropriate amount?

All of your anwers have helped a lot thus far. Please keep them coming!
PLEASE READ!!

I think this question has been resolved. Thank you for all who’ve answered it, you’ve been very helpful. I will choose a Best Answer soon, however I’m leaving this open hoping some of you will see this:

I NOW HAVE A FOLLOWUP QUESTION WHICH I’VE POSTED SEPARATELY ON YAHOO ANSWERS. I would really appreciate it if any of you could help me with this new problem. To find my 2nd question quickly, just 1) click on my name; 2) At the bottom of my profile, click on the "Questions" tab; and 3) Click on my new question (I only have two questions in there)

Thanks again!

My fiance and I would like to have a destination wedding sometime between February and April of next year. We really don’t want to go anywhere tropical.

My hope is to keep things budget friendly and stay in the United States.

The plan is to have about ten of our closest family members fly with us over a weekend. We’ll get married and then finish out our honeymoon on location. When we return we are going to have a simple/casual party for the rest of our guests.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I want it to be very pretty and nice but not TOO expensive because I’m working with a low budget.
can’t take a cruise because my wedding party is from all over the country and needs to fly in. so it’s best if they fly into mexico

I don’t really care where I go, I just really need to know how to source this out. I have never travelled before, so I don’t know where to go or what is affordable for where, let alone finding a place that can do weddings on short notice. If anyone can help, I would be greatful. Thanks in advance.

any regrets about destination wedding?

my boyfriend and i are getting in married in 9 months. we were planning on doing it in Vegas to make it more simple, but i’m so stressed out with all the planning! i can’t imagine how stressful a big wedding at home would be. now we just want to elope to St. Lucia or Jamaica. our parents would be there, but i don’t know if i’ll regret having everyone else missing it. are big weddings worth it or is going on a weddingmoon (sandals) just as good?
typed to fast, please excuse poor grammar
how embarrassing, i mean too fast
