How do I paint stones?
Ok, I’m planning to have a sea-themed wedding and I think that it would be really personal (and inexpensive) to paint everyone’s names on stones that I would get from our local beach. They would double up as place names and as favours that people could take home. I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this? Should I be looking for any particular types of stones? Do I need to put some sort of base varnish on (I’m thinking like when you do your nails!) before painting the names on – otherwise will the paint not soak in? I don’t want to paint over the colour of the stones so it would have to be something clear. Then, what sort of paint should I use to do the names? And, finally, should I use some special varnish to seal them? Will they need ‘cooked’? To many questions – hopefully someone will be able to help

You can also use acrylic paint and it will go on any smooth surface and you can use a Clear Acrylic spray when you are finished.
And it will hold up as good as Enamel and will dry very fast. so there is no waiting long hours for it to dry.
And it cleans up with water instead of solvents.
The Acrylics also come in all colors.
Use flat round stones, you can get them at Lowes
and Home Depot or any Landscape Supply .
Okay you can paint just about any kind of stone, but it is best to steer clear of porus stone. I would select smooth stones similar to what you find along river edges. You will want to clean them prior to painting. I recommend a scrub brush and detergent to clean them. Use a enamel based paint such as found in fingernail polish or cans in craft stores. It is not necessary to put a clear coat on first, but it doesn;t hurt and it will make it easier to paint the names on. If you do that let them dry first. You can use the same clear paint to put on a finishig coat afterward. We have used this method for turning rocks into little ladybugs and the like. It works and is very easy to do.
