I may just not get it since I am a guy, but what is the point of a bridal shower and a bachelorette party? Do the ppl give gifts at the shower like a baby shower? then why would they need to have a shower if they are giving gifts at the wedding? Or is it just an interchangable thing?

My friend is having a destination wedding and I am the Maid of Honor. What are my general duties?
The guests will arrive on a Saturday morning and the bachelorette party will be that same evening. The wedding will be that following Monday. Should I plan a bridal shower too? Maybe for Sunday, or Saturday before the bachelorette party? (Most guests including myself all live far apart and it would be difficult to have a bridal shower ahead of time).
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! 
to me it seems like a thing for people to get more presents, because at my cousins wifes bridal shower we had to bring a gift and then we had to give one at the wedding too. to me it seems greedy..

I am attending a bridal shower where the couple has no registry and has asked that guests contribute to their honeymoon. They are not registered at any honeymoon collection website either.
