What is the best way to bring money to honeymoon in Mexico?
We’re heading to Playa del Carmen for our honeymoon and don’t know the best way to pay for things, including our all-inclusive resort. Put it all on a credit card? Bring U.S. cash? Bring traveler’s checks? Not sure how many places down there accept each type of money. Advice, please!

We go to Playa del Carmen every year. We pay for our trip with a credit card. I would advise to convert any cash you bring to Pesos. You can do that right at the Cancun airport. it is easy to figure out. 1 peso equals a dime. 20 pesos equals $2.00 ect…plus the resort will help you figure out what you can’t. Traveler checks are also good. I found we used more smaller bills for any tipping you might do like for taxi’s ect…Hope you enjoy Playa as much as we did!
Travelers checks are usually well excepted in most areas. credit cards are usually good also.
Travelers checks are better and more secure than carrying cash.
Most places in Playa del Carmen will take your credit cards, but the best way is to take traveller’s checks and have them converted to the local currency when you get there. You can usually exchange them at your hotel. There is also a big kiosk in the middle of the shopping district where you can exhange them so that you don’t have to go back to your hotel while you are out.
I used a combination while down there. I took cash and my credit cards. I used the credit cards at places I could and cash at places I could not. The good thing with credit cards is they do the conversion for you, no math. With cash, not everyone is consistent with their exchange rates.
Traveler’s checks are WAY over rated! They really aren’t worth the bother. When we went, we found that the only place to change them was at the airport. So, terrific, you don’t carry the cash on the plane.
Cash and credit cards are best. Do change your cash to pesos at the airport.
Use the ATM machines at banks, airports and large grocery stores. Be very careful with credit cards and don’t let them out of your sight – they are sometimes double swiped or the number stolen. Travelers checks are a nice backup but you may only be able to cash them at banks.
Tell your bank you are going to Mexico so they don’t cut your ATM card off from activity in Mexico
Visa/Mastercard credit or debit cards, can pay with them or take money from any ATM in Mexico
Hotels, restaurants, stores … all of them will accept your credit card. Also bring some pesos to pay taxis, small snacks, etc.
