Depends on the context.
It’s traditionally a religious institution, but recent decades the various Governments have recognised secular unions as legal Matrimony. Now some minority groups are looking for this same recognition.
And some Religious sects are protesting.
I feel there needs to be a recognised secular equivalent to religious Matrimony.
.
To provide a stable environment and set of circumstances in which to rear children
To provide a stable economic unit in which people can improve their circumstances (e.g., together they can afford a home)
It’s also a way for two people to publicly declare their commitment to each other
And a great excuse for a really good party!
(got married in October. Still paying for it…!)
To eat cake and wear white after labor day, then it becomes another job.
It’s so the woman can learn to be a good housekeeper.
She then gets married again and keeps that house too !!
marriage is for the purpose of procreation (having kids).
in a legal sense… all it means is two people’s finances becom one
in a romance sense… its the coming together of two people committed to spending there lives together ti’ death do us part
It’s kind of like getting baptize is showing the world that you have accepted the lord as you savior.
Marriage is a way to show publicly that you and your loved one are now one and are in love.
Marriage should be like joining a fraternity… there should be no God or Government involved…
It is a social regulation evolved/adopted to secure some relations instead of becoming way-ward.
Being with one mate is as old as the human species itself. Marriage is a recent tradition just for the religous to have their god or gods witness thier being together.
Invented by some religious unelected nut (as most thing are) to ensure obedience to the wishes of the few, who can then – unelected – thus rule the masses.
As are all religions. The Middle East Islamic religion the greatest offender of them all – all totally unelected – and rule by every vile conceivable atrocity imaginable
To have children and to see them grow and populate the earth.
It is your protection from sin. The society is very liberal. You see lot of beautiful women in revealing dresses or an obscene scene on TV, you feel need of sex. If you are married, you go straight to your wife and she comes to you.
Second purpose of marriage is to provide a loving and caring atmosphere to children. A child is essentially what his parents make him. If he gets love, care and attention, he learns it from home and returns the same to society.
Third purpose of marriage is providing legal cover to relation between the two sexes, so that the questions of inheritance could be resolved in accordance with law.
Muhammad Javed Iqbal
for a family-like the one you grew up in.
The ceremony of marriage is a celebration of your love, mutual respect and a lifetime commitment to each other in the presence of those who make up your world.
The purpose of matrimony is one of personal reasons only you and your partner can understand.
It is true that it has been forced upon us as a social normality, facilitated by the religious establishments to ensure the women, loved by men, stay faithful to their mate.
Choosing a mate for life is an individuals choice.
Should the population of the human race be so low that extinction was inevitable it is likely that multiple partners would be acceptable and promoted, with the aim of producing as many offspring as possible.
Not many other species would get the choice – they would just go out and mate to ensure the survival of the species.
This leads to another question – Why is the survival of a species (by reproduction) perceived within the species as being so important
